VanI-type accessory protein
The vancomycin resistance gene clusters contain three general categories of genes, the core resistance proteins (VanHAX), the accessory proteins (VanJKWYZ and MurF2), and the sensor-regulator genes (VanRS). The accessory proteins are not essential for resistance but are known to enhance resistance in some bacteria. Other accessory genes, such as vanW, have unknown function at this time. The VanI resistance cluster is characterized by its lack of VanH-like D-lactate dehydrogenase and so is unique. Its terminal product is D-ala-D-lac.
