Penicillin binding protein

Penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) are the target of beta-lactam drugs. Mutations in these proteins can result in lower binding affinity or a lower acylation rate, resulting in resistance to beta-lactam drugs. The most widely known PBP is PBP2a of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is encoded by the mecA resistance island.
