Many of the tripartite or multi-component efflux pump systems also have regulators that control expression of the pumps. Mutations in these regulators can cause constitutive expression and therefore resistance. Additionally, these regulators may be sensors for target molecules in or around the bacterial cell and are directly related to resistance mechanisms.
