Aminoglycoside-resistant 16S-23S rRNA O-methyltransferases

An uncommon mechanism of resistance can result when a loss-of-function mutation occurs in the tlyA gene, which encodes a putative rRNA methyltransferase. The resulting effect on the rRNA of the small ribosomal subunit results in reduced binding of aminoglycoside drugs that utilize the tlyA methylation sites.
