16S rRNA methyltransferases

Resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics can be conferred via methylation of the 16S rRNA of the 30S ribosomal subunit of the bacterial ribosome. Regions where aminoglycoside drugs bind within the 16S rRNA can be methylated by these endogenous enzymes, which prevents binding of the drug to its target.
